URGENT ACTION NEEDED
STOP THE HOME OFFICE‘S ILLEGAL ATTEMPT TO
DEPORT ERITREAN AND SIERRA LEONEAN ASYLUM
SEEKERS TO NIGERA, GHANA & CAMEROON
Stop this TITAN AIRWAYS private charter flight tonight!
Tell the Ghanaian and Nigerian High Commissions to stop colluding with the UK Goverment to remove people from their lives and homes here
Tonight at 22.30hrs profiteering company TITAN AIRWAYS plan to fly a private charter flights from Stanstead Airport to Ghana, Nigeria and Cameroon. This flight will illegally deport asylum seekers from Sierra Leone and Eritrea on these flights, leaving them stranded in foreign countries simply because authorities in Nigeria and Ghana are paid by the UK Government for each travel document they issue. See Full Press release here. It is against the law to remove asylum seekers to third-party countries. Many detainees on the flight tomorrow will be there because they cannot afford to pay for lawyers and have cases that do not fall under legal aid. Even for those with access to legal aid, it can be difficult to secure legal representation from detention. One man we are in contact with has lived in the UK for 24 years. He finished his two month prison sentence yesterday and only this morning was told he is to be deported tonight. He has two daughters here and has not even been unable to contact them today as they are in school.
PLEASE CALL GHANA HIGH COMMISSION 0207 201 5921 TO STOP WRONGFUL REMOVAL OF SIERRA LEONEAN NATIONAL TO GHANA
Ben Djamson is a Sierra Leonean national. In his contact with the UK Home Office this has never been disputed, all his documents and forms of ID state that he is from Sierra Leone. He has never been to Ghana and does not speak any languages spoken there, except English due to spending time in the UK. Despite this, Ghana’s High Commission have issued him with travel documents to be transported to Ghana, at the request of the UK Home Office. The Home Office arranged Ben’s appointment with the Ghana High Commission just two weeks ago, when the charter flight to Ghana and Nigeria was already arranged. Ben complied with their wishes but explained to the commissioner that he had never been to Ghana. He was told he ‘would soon enough’. This is clearly the Home Office using their leverage to fill charter flights, their goal being to get rid of people, and not related to the situation of individuals. The Ghana Commission is colluding in this, and the result may be Ben’s removal from the UK to a country he has never set foot in and has no connection with. Please call the Ghana High Commission to protest this and insist that they cancel the travel documents and refuse to play the UK Home Office’s games. Ghana High Commission: 0207 201 5921/ 0207 201 5900/ 0207 201 5901
PLEASE CALL NIGERIA HIGH COMMISSION 020 7839 1244 TO PREVENT WRONGFUL REMOVAL OF ERITREAN NATIONAL TO NIGERIA
Also on the flight will be Eritrean Miki Daskareen Ashiru, whom the Home Office is trying to deport to Nigeria. The Nigerian High Commission came to visit Miki last year in Morton Hall immigration detention centre. Their representative said that while his first two names are clearly not Nigerian, his surname Ashiru could potentially be Nigerian. On this basis and with no other evidence of having any connection to Nigeria or even having lived there, the High Commission issued emergency travel documents. The representative accepted that she did not have any identification or record of Miki in Nigeria but said that his surname was enough evidence. The Home Office have records of Miki’s history of torture. Most of his teeth have been pulled out; he has numerous bullet wounds on his right leg and scars on both ears. It is explicitly against Home Office policy to detain survivors of torture. Miki cannot legally be removed to Nigeria as he is not Nigerian. He has been in the UK for 22 years and his life is here.
