UPDATE: MAHFUZUL’S REMOVAL DIRECTIONS HAVE BEEN CANCELED. HE WILL NOT BE ON THE FLIGHT TOMORROW.
Urgent action is needed to stop the forced removal of our friend, Mahfuzul Hoque. Please read below and take action:
Mahfuzul Hoque first came to the UK in 2006 on a student visa to study accounting. After being here in the country legally for nearly 10 years, the Home Office are trying to deport him due to an expired visa on a flight TOMORROW, 23 MARCH at 8.30am on flight QR010, Qatar Airways, from Heathrow Airport Terminal 4.
If there is anyone in the London Area who can go to Heathrow TOMORROW MORNING to try and draw attention to the removal, please contact the Unity Centre on 01414277992!
After graduating he earned a sponsorship visa from GPRS Accountants Ltd in Essex.
Knowing his tenuous immigration status, they took incredible advantage of him while he worked there. His boss once held his biometric card for over a week. When this caused the Home Office to question his whereabouts, Mahfuzul tried to explain that his boss had his identity documents, but, as is so common with the Home Office, they did not care that he was being exploited and taken advantage of. They took action against him on only one shred of ‘evidence’ from his boss: that Mahfuzul was not showing up for work. Mahfuzul has attested to the fact that this is not just something he suffered through – he said that employee turnover at this company was unjustifiably high and that payments were often withheld. His own payment in September 2014 never came.
During this time, Mahfuzul met the woman who would become his wife. They fell in love, got married, and were even considering having children together. His statement below is a testament to their relationship and love for one another – which the Home Office vehemently deny.
After the ordeal with GPRS Accountants Ltd, Mahfuzul was detained in November 2015. For the past four months, he has fought to get bail, put in Judicial Reviews, and be released from detention. The lawyer previously representing him severely messed up the Judicial Review however – this caused the Home Office to be allowed to shirk responsibility and keep Mahfuzul detained. Even though the lawyer messed up the paperwork, the Home Office wouldn’t reverse their decision. A legal aid lawyer Mahfuzul saw after he ended his relationship with the previous lawyer even said this would be grounds for suing, it was that severe.
The stress of being in detention for four months has taken its toll. Mahfuzul says he is always worried, especially about his wife. He requested to see a doctor 3 times. Only once was he allowed an appointment. There, the doctor told him he was having panic attacks, but offered no advice or counseling on how to make them stop – another testament to the inhumane and medically dangerous system that is detention. Mahfuzul has had trouble sleeping, has severe panic attacks, and says most times he feels like he can’t even breathe. Yet, he says, “I wouldn’t spend over 4 months in detention like this if I don’t have my wife here.” She says she won’t survive if he is removed.
He should not be returned to Bangladesh. His family and his life are here in the UK. Please read his words below and take action against the Home Office, against Qatar Airways, and against this unjust system that is tearing apart two people who love each other and want nothing but to be together.
Read Mahfuzul’s words below:
I am Mahfuzul Hoque from Bangladesh. I fell in love with my wife, Katarezyna Alieja Lobeda sometime in Autumn 2014. We first met in April/May 2014. I can’t exactly remember these dates. Never thought these would cost us this much. I used to walk her home. I can’t give a date when i started to feel for her. We got engaged and married 11 August 2015. I didn’t happen easily. We had to wait about 4 months because I am a non-EU member and I need permission from HO to get married. I have spent over 4 months in detention and don’t know what will happen in future. We don’t know when we talked about having kids! When we went to GP 6 months ago. What transport we used to come to UK, how my wife got her job, she came to UK?? So according to HO our relation is not real. And now they want to remove me from UK. HO is not letting em to be with my wife until we prove ourselves in the court. The time they are taking from us can they give us a moment back? They don’t care how many times we beg them just to let us be together under any conditions. HO set a flight for me tomorrow 8:30am QR010. I have spent last 4 months in detention listening to my crying every night. But if they sent our life will be even more difficult. My wife is so stressed and I did not sleep last 2 nights in a row. Wondering what have we done? Is it a crime to fall in love? Don’t we have any night to be together?
