Siyasinga and Inga

22 year old Siyasinga Meyi and her baby daughter Inga were detained on Monday 11th February 2008 when they went to report at the Home Office in Glasgow. They have issued directions for Siyasinga and Inga to be forcibly removed from the UK on Saturday 16th February.

Inga was born in the UK when Siyasinga was here on a work visa from South Africa. After her birth, Siyasinga sent Inga back to South Africa to live with her parents as she was on her own and had no family in the UK to support her. Unfortunately some of her relatives were unhappy that she had had a baby with a someone who wasn’t from the same ethnic group (Inga’s father is Zimbabwean) and threatened to kidnap Inga and take her to Zimbabwe. When Siyasinga went to the South African police they said they couldn’t help her, so Siyasinga brought Inga back to the UK where she thought she would be safe and claimed asylum.
Siyasinga’s case was refused because the Home Office don’t think she and Inga have close ties in the UK, even though Inga was born here and her father still lives here.
Because Inga was born in the UK she has no immunity to malaria, which in endemic in South Africa. This puts her at risk of becoming seriously ill or dying if she contracts the disease.
We need urgent action to help stop Siyasinga and Inga’s removal.

 What you can do:
1. Fax letters of support to Rt. Hon. Jacqui Smith, Secretary of State for the Home Office asking the removal be stopped and for them to be released. Please remember to include the HO Ref:M1357210.
